Why you should haggle to find cheap accommodation:
- You don’t speak direct with the owner.
- You often use a contact form.
- You have nothing to lose.
- The price won’t be increased.
- 60% of the time it works.
When is the best time to haggle for travel accommodation?
The best time to haggle for cheap hotel rates or cheap accommodation is up to 4 weeks before you travel.
We have, in the past, haggled for a cheaper rate, 10 months in advance.
6. Stay off the beaten track
Do you want to find cheap travel accommodation?
Stay outside of the tourist areas.
We recently stayed in a random little village in Kefalonia, Greece, and we saved almost 50% on our travel accommodation.
Always check how far you are from much needed local amenities or whether you can travel around.
Top tip – use Google street view to spy out the land and see how far places are.
Whilst you will find really affordable hotels in the sticks, there’s always a catch.
You know what we mean right?
You find and amazing cheap hotel that just seems too good to be true.
It is too good to be true. In fact – it’s 10 miles too good to be true.
Consider the pro’s and con’s:
- Hiring a car vs public transport or walking.
- How far are local amenities?
- Are the things to do?
If you don’t mind staying out of the way, then stay off the beaten track. You could always use your legs and walk more.
7. Get your breakfast
Find the cheapest hotel booking site like Booking.com and check whether your hotel booking offers breakfast in the price.
If it doesn’t, work out if it would be cheaper to pay a bit extra for breakfast with your travel accommodation, and find one that includes breakfast.
A breakfast with a drink can cost anything from €3 to €10 a day.
If you’re travelling for a week, it can cost you €70 just on your first meal of the day.
If there’s two of you, that’s €140. And if you have children, well, you don’t want to know the price.
Top tip – if you get breakfast with your cheap hotel, stuff your face. Make the most of it.
You could be even more savvy and try contact the cheap accommodation owners…
“Throw in breakfast and we will book!”
Now that’s savvy!
Bottom line is this:
- Book early.
- Shop around.
If you apply the suggestions in this article, you will always find cheap accommodation when you travel!
