1. What Type Of Holiday

First, you need to know what you like and choose a travel destination based on your main travel reason.

Top Tip – go get a pen and paper, think about this one and go write these ideas down for yourself.

Types of holidays:

  • Countryside, beach or city destination?
  • Europe or the World?

Sit down and think about what type of vacation/ trip you want and then write down a list.

You’re halfway to commitment  to choosing a holiday destination.

2. Why Do You Want To Travel?

Tell, please – what is it that makes you want to travel?

If you can’t think of anything, you can get some inspiration here.

If you know why you want to do something, you have reason, you want or need to do it.

This is key when you are choosing a travel destination.

Are you travelling because:

  • You want to relax?
  • You want to escape the rat race?
  • You want to connect with your innerself (deep)?
  • You want to get sunburnt?

Knowing exactly why you want to travel will help you how to choose a travel destination.

3. What You Are Travelling For?

So you still need to choose a travel destination.

Great! Progress. You’ve asked your boss for the time off work and all you need to do is book cheap flights and you’re good to go.

Oh, wait…

You have no idea where to go on holiday. You need to pick a destination.

You know why you want to travel but what you are travelling for is still unclear.

Do you want to travel for:

  • Food?
  • Sightseeing?
  • Adventure?
  • Swimming?
  • Partying?
  • History?
  • Culture?

Paint party is another great option?

Top Tip – narrow down the specific goal of your trip, this will help you pick the right destination.

That might sound obvious but knowing exactly what you are travelling for will help you pick the right holiday for you.

Like us, we love culture and sightseeing, so this allows us to choose a travel destination a lot easier and quicker.

4. Find The Road Less Travelled

Thinking outside of the box is the clever way to choose a travel destination.

This is a must if you want to choose a travel destination.

We always try to be different. We look for the “why would you go there?” destinations.

Top Tip – look outside of the main tourist areas, for small villages you can’t even pronounce.

5 things to keep in mind:

  1. Go somewhere you haven’t heard of
  2. Look for places locals go to holiday
  3. Look out for the cheap flights to random places
  4. Google Google Google
  5. Out in sticks

Often, finding the places people don’t go will help you choose a travel destination.

5. Do Something Different

Are you the traveller that goes to the same place, same hotel, year in, year out?

Perhaps when you’re choosing a holiday destination, you’ve always gone to a travel agent.

Top Tip – why not be crazy, spontaneous, don’t book through an agent, have a go at DIY travel!

Or maybe you’ve always gone to a beach in a popular tourist destination.

Why not stay in a mountain village, away from the crowds?

You’ll get more out of your trip if you try something different.

6. Be Clever

Ok, Ok.

So you don’t need to know how to choose a holiday destination.

Wait! Flights are too expensive to my chosen destination now….HELP!”

Try this:

  • Choose your destination
  • Open Google Maps
  • Find the second closest airport to your destination
  • Google the stuffing out of the surrounding towns
  • Find flights and book

Get the train or bus to your destination.

Or you can stay in the surrounding towns you found flights to. Just to mix things up a bit.

We wanted to see Florence – we ended up in Bologna.

We had a better time. So try not staying in your “I’d love to go there” travel destination.

Try this when you choose a travel destination.

7. Book Now

When is the best time to book a holiday?

Prices go up.

Prices very rarely go down.

So procrastinating won’t get you on that flight.

To avoid being smacked with higher prices:

  • Pick a trip type
  • Choose a destination
  • Find flights
  • Book!

Top Tip – to avoid the “bots” – don’t forget to go incognito when you are searching for a holiday

Choose a day in the week where you say-

On this day, I will book my adventure!

8. Be A Billy No Mates – Travel Alone

I don’t have anyone I can travel with“.

Never let the thought of travelling alone stop you from choosing a travel destination.

Reconnect with yourself on a solo trip. Deep.

I (James) had one of the best experiences travelling solo to Spain.

You’ll always meet new and interesting people and you’ll always be more inclined to go exploring.

Also, it always works out cheaper as you haven’t got your annoying rich friend with you. Yeah, you know the one.

9. Budget Is Best

I don’t have much money“.

Don’t let this little ripper stop you pick a trip you’ve always wanted to go on.

Often, budget is KING!

Because you’ll have to use your imagination and find the best things to do while you’re on holiday.

You might also learn to cook, because you’ll be making your own food.

Top Tip – stay in a hostel for cheap accommodation options and to save money when travelling.

Even if you choose your destination and it just so happens to be an expensive place, you can always find cheap accommodation options by staying in a hostel or even couchsurfing.

10. Travel In Your Own Backyard

Yes you heard right!

This is the most unpopular yet controversial travel subject.

Travel doesn’t have to mean getting on a plane for 20 hours and riding a tuk tuk.

This is how to choose a holiday the cheap way (usually).

Top Tip – start travelling small by seeing what your home country has to offer first…

The amazing thing is, you don’t have to go far.

In the U.K we have the mountains of Wales just 30 minutes from us. It takes us an hour just to get to an airport to then sit in for 2-3 hours.

Wow! Is this the Aples? – No, it’s Wales

Why travel in your own backyard?

  • It’s easy
  • It’s comfortable
  • It’s often cheaper
  • It’s less stressful
  • It’s less time consuming
  • No jet lag

If my 60 year old mum and dad can do it, then so can you!

11. Fly Where The Deals Are

“OK, I’ve booked accommodation, now I can book my flights”.

Top Tip – before you choose your holiday destination, search for cheap flights first, not second.

Find out where the cheap flight deals are and use this as your guide to pick a trip this year.

It’s the cheapest option.

12. Use Skyscanner “Search Everywhere”

Do you need inspiration?

Time is running out! Prices are increasing.

You need to know how to choose a holiday.

Try Skyscanner.

Use the “Search Everywhere” tool.

I’ve never heard of these places“.

This will give you a lot of ideas to start your adventure.

We use this little tool a lot.

It helps us to keep up to date with the best travel times and what new travel destinations are published.

Find out how to use Skyscanner to find cheap flights.

13. What? When? How?

There is no “why ” in this equation.

Before you choose your destination, think about these 3 key questions.

This is the key fundamental point and will help you to save money on travel.

Follow these steps:

What will you be doing there? Knowing the answer to this will help you decide when the best time to travel is.

Will you be:

  • Swimming?
  • Climbing?
  • Skiing?
  • Sunbathing?
  • Shopping?
  • Saving money? (big one)

When you are going in the year will narrow down your options so can start planning.

How long are you travelling for?

It might be too expensive to pick a trip to Greece in August.

After weighing up the above points, you’re often more open minded and inclined to choosing a holiday destination to somewhere completely different and at a different time.

How to do it:

  • Weigh up the pro’s and con’s
  • Look for different dates
  • Stay for a random amount of time (6 or 8 days instead of 7)

14. What Type Of Traveller Are You?

Are you a:

  • Luxury traveller
  • Cheap budget traveller
  • Lazy traveller
  • Adventure traveller
  • City traveller

Are you the type of traveller who enjoys sitting by the pool, martini in hand, a good book…aaaah….and relax?

Or do you love the outdoors and getting out seeing the world?

We love both. It’s good to taste a bit of everything.

Top Tip – try different types of destination to see what you like. i.e mountains vs beach or city.

But knowing what “type” of traveller you are will help you pick a destination that is right for you.

15. Use Social Media

Use the search feature in Instagram to find new and interesting places.

This is how to choose a holiday destination based on real people and real encounters.

We think this is sometimes better than reading reviews or searching the internet for places to visit.

Instagram is our favourite procrastination tool. We spend hours finding new places to visit.

Pinterest is also another great option as you can save your ideas to a board and gather travel ideas.

16. Travel Bloggers

Travel blogs are KING!

You’re reading one.

18. Flick Through Magazines

Magazines? – “Whooooo?!

What are magazines great for?

Flicking through the pages…looking at the pictures.

But if you dig a little deeper and take the time to read the articles, you’ll soon find that it’s what you’re looking for when choosing a travel destination.

National Geographic and Lonely Planet are great travel magazines.

They usually focus on less obvious travel destinations.

19. Choose A Different Month

Greece in December?

The Alps in August?

You’ll find what these travel destinations aren’t known for.

Get us?

Top Tip – travelling at the wrong time to the right destinations is the cheapest way to travel.

So try visiting the beauty of the mountainous region of the Peloponnese in the winter and experience Greece with a twist.

This is a perfect way how to choose a holiday destination that you’ll always remember.

20.  YOLO!

You only live once.

Do you want to sit in your rocking chair at a ripe old age and think…

oh well, that was boring“.

So take note.

Top Tip – do something different, don’t look at the negatives and book your adventure NOW!

Laura agrees. WOO!
