Skyscanner Review

Looking for a good Skyscanner review? When our good friends at gobble SEO noticed us struggling to find cheap flights to get us travelling, they recommended we give Skyscanner a try. And try we did.

Receiving over 50 million unique visitors to their website every single month, a long with 40 million downloads of the Skyscanner app, is there any wonder why this airfare comparison site is the go to place for cheap flights.

Skyscanner is perfect for those wanting to jet off last-minute, plan months ahead for their trip, search for a cheap hotel or even book cheap car hire. This king of flight search websites sits on its glorious throne as the leading airfare comparison site in Europe and the UK.

Skyscanner has long been the go-to place top buy cheap flights as they now have their very own Chinese version Tianxun.

But is Skyscanner trustworthy?

That’s why we (the helpful folk at Frequentravlr) have decided to give you the low down in this Skyscanner review.

Is Skyscanner the best airfare compare site

Whilst we do use other flight comparison sites such as Kayak, Cheapflights and Momondo, we seem to use Skyscanner the most.

Having said that, what it lacks, other sites make up for and vise versa.

Each has its strengths and weaknesses, including Skyscanner.

ProsCons
"Flexible" search toolInaccurate pricing
Comprehensive searchNot always cheapest
User friendly appQuestionable partners

Not only does it offer a comparison search on flights, but Skyscanner hotels search is a great tool to keep.

Using the Skyscanner hotels comparison, you can often find amazingly cheap deals on both your flights and accommodation.

Skyscanner Features

skyscanner review

Skyscanner is a flight comparison site – a very good one at that. It isn’t a flight booking site.

Top tip – never be mistaken, Skyscanner is a flight compare site, you won’t get the full price until you’ve reached through to the booking page.

However, you can book flights via Skyscanner.

It does all the hard work, so you don’t have to.

What are the benefits of using Skyscanner?

Simply put, if you’re searching for cheap flights and you don’t have much time, using an airfare comparison site will save you a tonne of time, and ultimately save you a whole lot of cash.

By using Skyscanner, you’ll be able to find flights from multiple flight providers.

Skyscanner specs

Skyscanner is definitely generous when it comes to coverage.

Searching over 1200 airlines in total, you’re more than covered when it comes to finding a cheap flight.

For this reason we decided to start our series of flight comparison sites by providing you with this amazing Skyscanner review.

Who is Skyscanner for?

If you’ve read posts on travel blog before, you’ll know how much we value accuracy and value.

Skyscanner certainly offers the cheapest deals on flights.

And although we won’t say we are travel “experts“, (yes – that word gets thrown around a lot) we will say that we feel confident using Skyscanner to find cheap flights and our go to flight comparison site.

Most Skyscanner review articles will tell you exactly the same.

Skyscanner Pricing

Whilst you’ve probably read all of the Skyscanner reviews Tripadvisor offers, no one will actually tell you how much you can expect to pay for a flight, unless you try it for yourself.

We were able to find flights from Liverpool to Craiova, Romania for £4 each way.

Now that’s cheap.

So, using Skyscanner UK or Skyscanner Europe, you’ll definitely find a great deal on flights.

Pros of using Skyscanner

Ok – let’s be straight. There isn’t a single perfect thing in this world. In fact, nothing even comes close.

However, Skyscanner’s “Flexible – Search everywhere” tool comes pretty darn close.

Skyscanner “Flexible” tool

skyscanner reviewThe really cool thing about Skyscanner’s “Flexible” search tool to find cheap flights, is that it’s so easy to use.

And for us, if we’re ever lacking inspiration for our next travel destination, we find using this helpful tool saves us a lot of time and gives us that “oh, I didn’t think of going there” type of reaction.

Are you looking for travel inspiration? Then use Skyscanner’s “Flexible” tool.

Skyscanner app

89% of us prefer to search the internet to find a product or service using mobile phones and devices. The Skyscanner app offers mobile users to find flights easily and quickly and is definitely a USP of Skyscanner.

Launched in 2011, it has quickly become one of the most downloaded airfare compare apps online.

Find the best time to travel with a colour coded calendar allowing for easy access to the cheapest dates to travel.

Allowing for quick and easy flight filtering options, the Skyscanner app features a super fast flight search similar to the fantastic desktop site.

Our Skyscanner app review would have to be full marks. It’s easy to use, simple and allows users to filter their search results.

Comprehensive search results

I can’t be bothered searching through hundreds of websites to find cheap flights!

Yeah – us neither.

Skyscanner does all of the hard work for you. Did we mention that the coverage simply awesome!

Skyscanner searches well over 1200 airlines and travel websites. WOW.

Can you imagine the agony, never mind the time, of searching through 1200 websites to find your cheap flights this year?

Many Skyscanner reviews won’t give you the low down, the honest truth, but the truth is, Skyscanner have got your back.

Unlike other flight comparison sites, Skyscanner have partnered up with tonnes of budget airlines all around the world.

What does all of this mean?

This means that you, yes you, the paying customer, is guaranteed to save a buck or two on your holiday this year.

Because who doesn’t love saving money – right?!

But how do you find cheap flights using Skyscanner?

Using Skyscanner “Cheapest month”

A Skyscanner.net review won’t be complete without showing you how to find cheap flights.

skyscanner review

This is where Skyscanner tends to show off. What grabbed our attention is how easy it use.

And if you’re like us – two flexible travellers, using the “Cheapest month” search option will definitely give you a lot more options and choice when searching for cheap flights.

This is where we’ve saved a tonne of cash flying to Bologna, Italy.

Having navigated past this stage, we soon noticed that this was the best feature of Skyscanner UK. Users are able to find flight prices per month and even the whole year.

But it doesn’t stop there. The clever bots at Skyscanner have enabled the searches to let users know which airport is the cheapest to fly out of , and to.

However, we noticed that it won’t cover all of the available airports and flights. After a bit of clever research, we found that results are based on unique searches. Meaning that if no one has searched for that specific route, then it won’t produce results.

Cons of Skyscanner

Remember we said “Nothing is perfect“- or something like that.

Have you read the Skyscanner reviews Tripadvisor have published? They can be unreliable as everyone has their own unique experience with companies.

Are you sitting there thinking “Is Skyscanner trustworthy?” – We will give you the full truth on what users regularly complain about this airfare compare giant. So read on.

Inaccurate prices

After using flight comparison sites for some years, there is one thing that we have to bring to the forum in this Skyscanner review. After searching through hundreds of forums and Skyscanner reviews, there is one clear common denominator.

There seem to be regular discrepancies between the final flight price and the actual live price of the flight found on the booking site.

However, this is a common problem when search engines are producing results due to the amount of data being processed.

There is however, an easy way to fix this problem.

Top tip – be sure to click-through to the airline or travel companies website to get the full live price of a flight.

Not always the cheapest prices

Flights found on Skyscanner aren’t always the cheapest. We recently searched for flights from Manchester to Phuket, Thailand, and found that the flights were cheaper on Cheapflights.co.uk.

However, it can just mean that Skyscanner hasn’t produced a live flight price.

To rectify this problem, always make sure you check other travel websites to ensure you aren’t paying over the odds for your flight.

It’s always worth clicking through to the travel companies website to receive the full price.

Questionable Skyscanner partner companies

You may have noticed this one yourself.

Ever found a flight or super cheap holiday deal and thought “who is this company?“.

Unfortunately, Skyscanner have come under the spotlight because of the companies they have chosen to work with.

Consumers have filed numerous complaints for non refundable booking errors when purchasing flights.

Top tip – we recommend booking with a reputable company travel company. No one wants any nasty surprises.

Alternative flight booking sites

If absolute accuracy is the most important thing to you – we recommend trying Cheapflights.co.uk as consumers report accurate pricing, even if the average prices may be higher.

Another savvy alternative is travel company Kayak. Which when compared with Skyscanner, performed well overall and had no problem competing to find cheap flights.

Is Skyscanner Atol protected?

As more and more holidaymakers are using comparison sites, such as Skyscanner, to find cheap flights, consumers are wondering what protection they actually have.

So the question is – “Is Skyscanner Atol protected?”

Skyscanner is a flight comparison site, therefore, the onus is on you to check if you’re covered.

Top tip – always check with the travel company if your flight is covered.

Skyscanner has come under the spotlight again as consumers have purchased flights found on the site, only to find that they aren’t protected.

Your super cheap flight may not be all that it seems.

So before you splash the cash, always check with the travel company whether they’re Atol protected.

Is Skyscanner trustworthy

Lets cut to the chase. Is Skyscanner trustworthy? Can you find cheap flights using Skyscanner?

Although consumers have experienced problems with the legitimacy of Skyscanners partners, we feel confident using this airfare compare king.

Our Skyscanner review should leave you feeling confident for future flight searching.

Final thoughts on Skyscanner review

For us – we feel confident using Skyscanner UK.

It’s our go to site for finding cheap flights.

We aren’t obsessed with how precise the searching has to be or what features flight comparison sites offer. We just want something quick and easy to use.

Skyscanner’s “Flexible” tool does it for us. And if you’re a flexible flyer, then Skyscanner is the one for you.

Yes, it does lack in temporary price accuracy, but the coverage and user-friendly search filters more than make up for that little hiccup.

Quick round up in this Skyscanner review:

  • Click to the booking site to get the full live price.
  • Always refer back to this Skyscanner review.
  • Make sure you’re Atol protected.

Thank you for this informative post. I use Skyscanner often for a first orientation of flight prices but afterward I mostly check the price at the airlines directly as the price which is shown is not always the endprice. Anyway it is a good way to get a first glance on the price level.

Yes, that’s very wise. And it’s always wise to compare between 2 or 3 other cheap flight websites. Thanks for your comment.
